PTA Taiwan Conservation Study Tour

 Dear Form 1 – 5 Parents,

In order to help students develop further their understanding of the conservation initiatives developed by Taiwan, the La Salle College Parent Teacher Association is organizing a study tour, ‘Our Lovely Planet’, to Taiwan, in early July 2015.

The study tour is a joint project with St Paul’s Secondary School Parent-Teacher Association and is to be assisted by the Department of Taiwan Affairs, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR.

The group will start the journey from Kaohsiung and travel towards Taipei.  On the trip, participants will visit spectacular sites such as Hengchun Peninsula, Qijin Scenery District, the National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium, Tianliao Moon World, Gaomei Wetlands and Yangmingshan Xiaoyoukeng.

In addition participants will visit cultural sites such as the Ten Drum Cultural Village, Fort Zeelandia, the Anping Tree House, Talt & Co and the National Palace Museum, Taipei 101, the 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan, Tamsui Old Street, and Jiufen Old Street.  Participants will also have a chance to taste Taiwanese snacks and local foods at various famous night markets.

To extend participants’ understanding of conservation in Taiwan, the group will also visit renowned conservation projects such as the Taichung Power Plant, Beitou Incinerator, and the Taipei City Government Refurbished Furniture Exhibition Centre.  Through visiting these projects students’ will gain an understanding of Taiwan’s conservation policy and its implementation, as well as its achievement, in terms of environmental protection and conservation.  Participants will also have a practical experience in waste recycling at the Tzu Chi Culture & Communication Foundation. The tour will also include a visit to the Chinese Culture University to learn about tertiary education in Taiwan.

Project learning is to be embedded on this tour.  Students will need to conduct small scale research projects.  Their learning outcomes will be appraised by teachers and parents after the tour.  For further details please refer to the preamble and tentative itinerary attached.

The estimation of the tour cost will be around HK$8,500.  However, it may vary according to actual needs and logistical arrangements.  The charge will cover all necessary expenses of the trip and part of teacher leaders’ expenses (according to 1:10 ratio).  Participants are to apply and pay for a visa to Taiwan on their own.

Any surplus or deficit will be shared by participants.  Successful student applicants who have acquired financial assistance from the Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA) will attain a partial subsidy from our Parent Teacher Association as no student is to be excluded because of financial reasons.

All Form 1 - 5 students and their parents are invited to apply.  As there are limited vacancies, selection interviews may be conducted if necessary.  Student applicants are expected to have pleasing academic results, good conduct, and at least some basic Putonghua competence as it is hoped the tour will provide further oral proficiency.

Students selected will be capable of promoting our school image and acting as ambassadors of the College.

Parents of interested students are to apply for their son via eNotice before 31 March 2015.  They should also submit a cheque of HK$8,500 (payable to “LSCPTA”) and a copy of their HKID and Passport to the collection box placed at the School Office on or before Monday, 13th April 2015.

No refund will be applicable after successful applicants’ confirmation to the Tour and cheques of unsuccessful applicants will be returned.

For enquiries please feel free to contact Mr. CHAN Tong at 9418 5911 or by email at ct@lasalle.edu.hk .
