2007/01/03 Appeal from the Chairman Dear Parents, Happy New Year. The festive cheer that Christmas brings will be especially welcome this year as Hong Kong is enjoying a very robust and strong economy this year. We have every reason to cheer this year but amid the celebrations, I sincerely hope and trust we should be reminded that New Year is, at heart, a time for giving when thoughts turn to those needy ones and how we can help them. The community spirit of our parents has always been so evident all these years and with the 75th Jubilee Gift Campaign just being rolled out whilst we are celebrating the 75th Anniversary of La Salle, I do hope and pray that our parents can contribute to worthy causes of the School. Bro Thomas mentioned at the Thanksgiving Mass on Dec 15 about What One Man Can Do --- what one man can do is dream, what one man can do is love, what one man can do is change the world and make it younger. So, here we are, what one man can do - it's to help our School. This is my New Year wish. So dear parents who have been always working whole-heartedly for the School, may I ask you to 'reciprocate' to the School in ways you can. Your PTA will organize a fund raising dinner (Open Day Dinner) on Feb 3 in the School Hall and a ticket costs $500. Your PTA will also organize a walkathon on March 25 with the OBA and the SA and hopefully with the LSPSPTA. I propose that we should give to the school, help the school in putting more financial resources on academics, cultural and sports. We are not a DSS school and we have to be self-reliant. 4 parents have joint me already in donating – $500 per month (payable to La Salle College), for 3 years to the school. The donation is tax- deductable. One teacher did the same too, though he is not a parent. So now, we have 6 people make a monthly donation to the school for education purpose. On a seperate front, an old boy, a staunch supporter of La Salle has pledged to find $1 million for the School as seed money for education purpose. Bro Thomas and I had lunch with this old boy last week and he said he would ask several old boys (his friends) to contribute to this worthy cause. We always want the students to benefit and by making a donation, you are also helping your sons. The school management did not ask me to make a plea to the parents but my conscious tells me that it is my duty and obligation to do so. Bro Thomas has arranged with your PTA and has given us 18 old pictures of the School for auction purpose at the Open Day Dinner. Each picture, we hope, could fetch $30,000. Maybe this would be quite a burden if parents are asked to pay 'one-off', thus I am proposing that those parents, interested in subscribing the pictures, can make a monthly payment (for 36 months) to the School. Each month amounts to $833.33 and I shall arrange an autopay payment with the School in this regard. If you are interested and wish to support the School, kindly let me know. I always believe that one man should always have right thoughts and turn them to right deeds and this is how we can change the world. Donating to worthy causes of the School is all part of what makes La Salle something more. The School's education resources are very limited as compared with those DSS schools and without help from the parents and old boys, students in need of top class education would be denied the opportunity and may have far reaching implications for them. The 75th Jubilee Gift Campaign will last for a few years (3 years, I suppose) and this has been designated as a campaign for giving. I call on the parents to support the School and form an integral partneship with the management and the teachers so as to show our warm-hearted community spirit and great generosity we possess naturally. Once again, a Healthy and Prosperous 2007 to all of you. Gratefully yours, Thomas Wong, Chairman, LSC PTA |
